The Forest of Dean – Explore the Spooky Mysteries of the Forest

Many visitors flock to the Forest of Dean every year – it may be to head underground at Clearwell Caves at Christmas, to visit Father Christmas in his Grotto, maybe it is for a magnificent woodland walk around the sculpture trail or perhaps it is to get married at Gloucestershire wedding hotel venue the Speech House amongst the beauty of the ancient forest. But a place with a history as long and mysterious as the Forest of Dean also attracts ghost hunters – many people come hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the paranormal activity that is part of the rich history of the Forest of Dean. If you are hoping to join them, here a few places to search for spooky stuff…

Littledean Hall – Known by some as the most haunted place in Gloucestershire. Littledean Hall has long been known by the locals as ‘the haunted house’ it is said to be home to more than it’s share of spirits! The ghost of a Roundhead Captain has been seen by visitors to the hall, as well as the terrifying appearance of phantom bloodstains. The blue bedroom is by far the most sinister room of the house- it has been described as being too haunted to sleep in, and people describe a sick feeling on the staircase, and poltergeist activity including red and white flowers being thrown around has been reported in the dining room. It is believed that a murder that happened in the house is the reason behind the hauntings.

St Briavels Castle – This ancient Norman castle was built between 1075 and 1129 and saw plenty of murders during the 12th century. It attracts ghost hunters from all over the UK as it is one of the most haunted castles in England. Some of the spooky goings on at the castles include the crying of an invisible baby (during recent renovations to the ceiling, the wrapped-up corpse of a baby was found), and hands touching visitors or even tugging at their clothes. Some investigators do not stay through the night here due to the high levels of paranormal activities – one investigator even reported the sensation of hands gripping at their throat. It seems that many of the souls of the murder victims and maybe even the murderers themselves decided that they would stay here forever!
